where do you buy the Harrison's mesh or the super fine? i'm looking on line but cannot find either. i've been putting my Harrison's in a coffee grinder and sprinkling it on their seed along with some whole pellets.

I just googled it and found it here http://www.birdsafestore.com/harrisons.aspx?gclid=CNqz7ejawZkCFRNN5QodOHBNuA I didn't check shipping tho. Have you checked your local pet store?

I give more seed than pellet. Probably about 2/1. There's so much controversy about how much is too much and high protein causing gout or liver problems. I read somewhere about it causing problems further down the road like when they get to be 5 or 6 or so? I'll have to find where I read that.

kksuns, I know that too much protein can cause gout BUT, have you ever seen anywhere that it says HOW MUCH protein is too much? This is something I have wondered about. I know Harrison's were developed by a major avian specialist to most come as close as possible to the nutrients they would get on a daily basis in the wild. Knowing this, I find it hard to believe they would contain too much protein. Know what I mean?

I heard that parakeets should receive no more than 25% of protein per day. I'll try to find the link where I read that.

This is not the web site I found it from, but I found another which says the same thing.

The mesh is kinda powdery like if you ground up pellets. It leaves like a grit of good stuff on the veggies or seed if you sprinkle a little water on it first and then sprinkle the mesh.

caribean mom

the problem with bird foods in general is that not all birds are alike, each one has their own dietary needs.

a parakeet doesnt need as much protein as a macaw or a cockatiel.

i do not feed pellets everyday to my birds, the seed mix has a ton of protein and so do the pellets, so i give them pellets in the seeds only every other day.

harrisons is very good but its a general bird food geared toward "any bird" but keet owners must keep in mind they have parakeets nots macaws and cockatoos and amazons and tiels lol

too much protein does lead to gout.

you also have to keep in mind that every single pellet brand out there says that it should be the birds ONLY source for food, even harrisons, and actually harrisons even says not feed alot of veggies and fruits and if you do, only certain kinds.

well ok ... maybe the pellet is a well rounded meal but keets NEED to eat seed, they are grass birds parakeet means grass parrot for a reason lol and ive never seen ANY bird food specifically geared toward a parakeets dietary needs, seed mixes are done by size but the parrot and the tiel and the keet ones have the exact same ingredients just different sizes is all lol and the keet and tiels are mostly all millet.

and they NEED to eat those fresh foods as well, for nutrition and for enrichment.

so keet owners have to do alot of hit and miss and guessing when it comes to proper nutrition.

which is sad, you would think since they are they most common bird pet, or pet in general, that the market would be more geared toward them but it isnt.

smile

I finally found the article I was talking about up above. I had come across it when I was on avianweb.com looking for breeders in my area.I clicked on one of the breeder names and it took me here http://www.plannedparrothood.com/buying.html
If you click on Avian diet (on the left)and read that page you will also find "see a letter from a breeder" click and read that too.

Still, it is the individual bird owner's call as to how much pellet they feel is right for their bird.Personally after reading so much about the bad effects of too much protein, I'd rather feed less pellet and not take any chances of giving too much. (however much that might be! lol) And balance it out with lots of veggies, and seed.
