the vet wants me to feed 50/50 seed and pellets. Hunter will eat exact organic but the new guy eats Fusion and only picks out the seeds.

I would recommend getting a bag of pellets separate from the seeds. 1) most all pellets in seeds are colored 2) you can tell better if they eat the pellets 3) you do not throw away costly pellets because they have eaten the seed.

There are many ways to start a successful conversion.

This is something I posted in another thread, part of it deals with veggies too:

There are so many ways to introduce and change over to new foods. I know I have posted on this thread before so forgive me if I repeat myself.

My boys did the conversion to veggies with first using organic baby foods. I would sprinkle seeds on top and gently push it down in, that way, even when they are just picking the seeds off of the top, they still get the taste of the veggies while hulling them. While you are offering this (maybe 2 hours or so) you can remove any other food because you do have some familiar seed on the top so you shouldn't have to worry about starvation or anything.

Once they got to where they were eating some of the baby food on purpose, I started adding very finally chopped veggies. After a while they would eat the veggies with out the baby food or seed (though they still love a dish of baby food w/seed mixed in.)

Once they were eating the veggies good chopped up, I slowly started putting some bigger pieces in there. Some veggies they will eat whole (corn, broccoli flowers, romaine lettuce) and some I still need to chop.

Pellets you can start sprinkling them on the baby food too. Crush them fine and add them in. When you buy them, be sure they are small. Most brands, you will want to get the canary/finch size. If you get Harrison's, go with super fine.

As far as what is "right", I went through the same frustrations. What my vet said was that even at the aviary seminars he has been to, he can go to one "expert" and they will say one thing, cross the hall to another and they say something totally different.

I feed mine pellets 24/7-some will say that is not good. I feed veggies all through out the day and seeds intermittently throughout. Mostly the seeds are sprinkled on something or in a foraging toy. The foraging toy they always have access to when they are out of the cage-most of the day.

Too much protein is not good - can cause gout. Pellets have mostly about 14 grams of protein in a "serving". This is where the controversy arises as to if they should be offered 24/7 or not. I have yet to find anything that says how much protein is TOO MUCH. One of the top avian scientists worked on formulating the Harrison's pellets to most closely resemble what they would get in the wild so I have a hard time believing that the 14 gr. of protein / oz is TOO MUCH. That's me

There are other good ideas on that thread. Read more here:

Also, just type "pellets" or "conversion to pellets" in this sites search and you will find many threads on the topic.

A good conversion to pellets is a must for your budgies health.

Do your guys eat veggies? That is equally important. Veggies, pellets & seed are all needed for a good healthy diet.

Big fat "Ditto" to Caribbean Mom's excellent post! lol

The only thing I can add is that you can sometimes find small coffee grinders on sale for about $10 or so, to use for grinding up pellets, if needed.

My birds played with/threw the superfine Harrison's pellets and wouldn't touch the fine size. The coffee grinder made it all powdered and they didn't like that either. I finally used a regular old handcrank nut grinder to crush the fine pellets. It leaves some chunks and some powdered. This is the only way I have gotten them to eat it. They love it now. I also have it in a seperate dish from the seeds. They are really good about eating both plus the veggies.
Basically, it is a lot of trial and error. You just have to try the different ways because each flock is different.

My keets seem to really like the Lafeber's pellets, they smell very sweet so i wonder if that's why they like them so much. I didn't have to crush them or anything odd like that, they just ate them.

There is still loads of debate about seed vs pellet in the bird world. Most veterinarians i have spoken to suggest a mixture of seed, pellet and fresh fruit/vegies. I feed an 80/20 pellet/seed and offer fresh stuff daily.

Harrison's also puts out a mesh. It is all ground up and is sprinkled on other food or seeds. My vet said to sprinkle a little water on the seeds and then put the mesh on them. You wouldn't have to grind anything if you bought this stuff.

I feed super fine Harrison's and my boys gobble it up. It took a long time of combining and serving separate and rejoicing when I saw them eating them right out of the dish with nothing else. After a while when they trust seeing them around and they accidently eat one, they learn that they are good. If you are concerned about cost. Measure your seed out by the table spoon and give the correct proportion of pellets to seed. Throw the old ones out for the wild birds and it hasn't really gone to waste.

The super fine is just the size of seed and they take to it easier. It is organic and has feeding directions on the bag. You can supplement with fresh veggies but because it is complete and contains veggies, it cautions you to only supplement certain veggies.

They are creatures of habit. Every day give them pellets and they will try them sooner or later. It only takes once and Voila! they are pellet eaters.

Is the mesh a rough mixture of different sizes? My birds wouldn't eat it when I tried ground up. They like a mixture They have me trained so they get what they want!! lol

id never feed them pellets unless its a must from a vet

i also feed my keets sliced fruit ex. apple slices mushed carrot and raw broccoli smile

I feed my birds Harrison's maybe two or three times a week. The rest of the time, they eat seeds and lots of veggies. They love to play with and gnaw on the stems of herbs like parsley, dill and basil.

they sound like they are doing great! i tried pellets mixed in their food... no go. tried pellets alone, a keet will starve itself to death some times rather than try something new. i haven't had any luck, but if you do, PLEASE let me know, k ? good luck!
