Hi Everyone! I haven't been on this forum in so long. Here's what I've been dealing with since July 30,2008: My little budgie Preciousbaby has layed 52 eggs. I realize this is hard to believe, but this is a dangerous situation which could be fatal. She had her first Lupron injection two weeks ago and has since layed four eggs. Her next vet appt. is tomorrow when she will receive round two of the hormone injection to stop this laying. I love this bird so much and she thinks I am her mate. The vet told me she's laying due to the fact that she is very comfortable and is in love with me. Please I could use your support with this situation. I do hope this next injection stops her raging hormones. Please keep Preciousbaby in your prayers and thoughts. Thanks so much!! PB's Mom Joni.

I don't know what to say other than I will keep you and preciousbaby in my prayers. I sure do hope she is stopped soon. At this point I am sure you have done all the obvious, but I'll ask anyway. Have you tried moving things in her cage weekly in an attempt to keep her from feeling quiet so comfortable? Where does she normally lay the eggs? Have you tried making that area impossilbe to access or at least to lay eggs there?

If the injections just don't work, what is the chance that getting her a mate so she could at least lay viable eggs might slow her down some?

When she lays the eggs do you remove them? Do you replace them with marbles? Do you leave them in there?

I only have boys so I really don't know much just asking random questions as they pop in my head from reading other posts.

[size:11pt]CaribbeanMom hit on some important points. Also, I have heard, as may you have, about [color:#990000]reducing the “length of the day” by cutting back on the “daylight” hours for the bird. Shorter days simulate “winter” & apparently birds instinctively recognize winter as bad time to start a clutch. As you may also know, it is important to supplement an egg-laying budgie with [color:#990000]calcium. :) I am really sorry to hear about your little girl. It is bitter-sweet, isn’t it? :( Your vet says she is doing this because she [color:#990000]loves you so much. But of course, it is not healthy for her. I hope her treatment starts working soon. I’ll be thinking about the both of you. . . [color:#990000]GOOD LUCK!!!

Thank you for the wonderful support! I have first of all tried the environmental location change ie: moving her into a smaller cage with different toys in a different location. She even layed in that cage. Then I put her back in her big daytime cage, moved toys and she layed there. My little girl has layed an egg inside my shirt! I will not let her play inside my shirt any longer because that stimulates the nesting behavior. She also goes to sleep at 7PM every night in her closed dark bedroom and I wake her up at 7AM every morning with no exceptions. Her diet is the following: She has crushed egg shells with hard boiled egg now because of the calcium depletion, broccoli, her high quality seed with mineral powder(per vet) green leafy lettuce, corn and peas which I rotate every day. She will also eat my dinner which is always healthy. She tried a piece of fish yesterday. She loves to nibble on Wasa crispbread crackers (all Natural) for crunch. I'll keep you all updated. Vet appt. today with second injection. I'm trying my very best for my Precious!!!

I also have a chronic egg-layer: to date 76. What are these injections you're having done? I haven't heard about them. I've been trying all the other suggestions (i.e. moving cage around, letting her raise some babies) but am next going to try buying some fake eggs. Hope that your PreciousBaby slows down!!

Best wishes,
Kelly Kai
