I have noticed that Bernard's nails are getting long... he gets his toes snagged in my clothes and on the carpet. I have this kind of cement perch in his cage but it doesn't seem to be keeping them trimmed.

Does anyone know the best thing to do?
Can I get a better cement perch than the one I have?

The best way to keep nails trimmed is the trim them. I have not had any luck with cement or other perches keeping the nails trimmed. The textured perches have always lead to foot irritation with my keets. So I just have wood and plastic perches and periodically trim their nails myself. Make sure to have the proper trimming scissors and the special powder to stop bleeding if you accidentally cut too close. It may be scary at first, so just trim a few at a time, but you will get better the more you do it.

Mostly, my birds don't get really long nails. I make sure they have wooden and mineral or cement perches that are fat enough so the tips of their nails touch the surface and get worn down. (Skinny perches, regardless of the material, don't do anything to wear down the nails because the nail tips never touch them.)

I'm too worried that my birds will move just as I cut, so when one of my keets does need a nail trim, I go to my local bird shop. The owners are very nice and gentle, and it only takes a couple of minutes.
