Day 13

Baby #3 died last night. Don't know why, but it looks like he was maybe trampled by the others. He had a full crop, but he was kind of flattened out.

RIP Lil guy!

Oh Jessica, I am soo sorry to hear that baby #3 didn't make it.

Sad about baby #3 but it doesn't seem to be anything you could have prevented. The other two are doing great though right? I look forward to your pictures!!

Yep, the other two are doing awesome! He was, too, actually, so that's another reason I assume he was smothered by the other two, throw Mom in there and if he ended up on the bottom all night, being the smallest...I think he just couldn't breathe and was trampled. He didn't have any injuries, and like I said, his crop was full, so I don't think it was a health issue!

now that's something else to worry about when there are babies in the nest. Is suffocating a possible 'normal' occurance? At what age, do you take the mom away to avoid something like that occuring? Just curious questions...

Well, tomorrow, day 14, is when I am pulling them and putting them in a brooder and hand feeding them, between 7 and 14 days is normal time to pull them for hand feeding so that way they get Mom's antibodies. If left with Mom she'll feed them for about 6-7 weeks, unless Mom lays another clutch, then she'll push babies from the nest as early as 4-5 weeks. (Lily isn't having more babies, for he record! LOL) Keets fledge at around 5-6 weeks, but won't eat fully on their own til about 7-8 weeks.

Your so lucky. I want baby keets but my mom wont let me get a second keet. so im my keets flock. <3
But i was hoping my keet was pregnant cuz she looks a little big and she has that "attitude" but ive had her for 4-5 days and i dont think its gunna happen. Well congratulations. Your soo lucky and im sorry to hear about baby#3 <3 good luck with the other two. =]
