I heard about the bird flu thats going around. Are my birds and I safe from this disease? My brother is telling me to give the birds away because he thinks my keets might have the flu. ANyone have any useful input on this?

It's incredibly unlikely that your birds will ever contract any form of bird flu.

Exactly! That's what I've been trying to tell my mom over and over but she just refuses to listen. The birds need to be frolicking outside with diseased birds to contract a flu, and even then they probably won't get sick because they might be immune to it like pigeons are. She keeps on nagging me about getting rid of them, and reminding me that when a family member dies, it would be my fault etc etc, it gets me so frustrated!

It is so unlikely it is IMPOSSIBLE unless you go to aisia get a sick chicken and bring it home and put it in your cage! Even then the keets probably would not get it. Skippy/Pippy tell youe Mom a nurse on the keet forum told her to go to the CDC website and read the TRUTH about the so called bird flu and if she wants a reason for you to not have your birds it will have to be a different one. Maybe you need to open a dialog with your mom as to what her dis-feelings are about the birds. Making you responsible if someone gets sick is not a very motherly thing to do.

I think that this is all just journalistic crud. I think they want to scare us into thinking we have to watch their shows, or else we will die. Animom was right, it is higly unlikely a pet bird would contract bird flu.

It is not only fine feathers that make fine birds.

Bird flu is real OpusKeets. Geez don't take things like this lightly. It's only in domesticated birds like ducks and chickens. It has also made its way to Canada now so I think people should start becoming more aware of this.

the bird flu is real, but the chance of keets having it is highly unlikely. like animom said, unless you went to asia and brought home a chicken and put it in your cage, your keet won't get bird flu. it affects poultry and fowl mainly, from what i've been told.
