i have to say that Esso just loves his sandpaper perches. I know people advise against them, and i would never use exclusively sandpaper perches - but Esso has a couple of sandpaper perches and he just loves them. I agree they do nothing for his toenails. But he just loves to rub his beak against them - in fact he wears them to almost being entirely smooth within a week or 2. He will even hang upside down to wear away the underside of the sandpaper perch once the top part is smooth. If esso were to develop sores on his feet obviously i would not use them - at which point i will be the first to say i was wrong to have them available - but until then, there is no way i could take them away from him. He just loves them. I also think that some keets may have problems with them and others do not - just speculating.
chance favors the prepared mind.

I have one of those resin based sand perches that are shaped kind of like a branch and come in different colors.
Petco had them on sale, so I bought one for Gebo the day he arrived.
I agree with Esso's Mommy, that if they are hard on the bird's feet, you sure wouldn't know it to see how often Gebo chooses that perch to sit on. He also likes to rub his beak and head on it, and also chew on it.
It is the only sand perch I have in his cage, but I am not sure agree that they are bad for the bird. Considering all the various perches he has to choose from, he seems to pick that one to hang out on a lot of the time.

I know some birds do fine, but many do not fair so well. I have met and heard dozens of people having problems with those, a couple here but mainly at my favorite bird store, they come in and ask why their bird is limping and so on. The problem is that the keets many times don't know that the perch is hurting them, many of the people who I talked to said that it was their birds favorite perch and they just loved it, so you see that if they bird didn't like it they would never have problems because they would never be on it. If you guys decide to keep using those the best advice I have heard was to put it in only for a little while like maybe a couple days a week or so, if you have it in all the time eventually they will get sore, even if you don't think so. I even used to get sore feet from walking in pools and that is a very smooth surface. Anyways just be warned guys, especially for those of you that have birds that like them, I really haven't heard much of anything good about those ever, and I know you guys could find something else they would rub against that wouldn't hurt their feet. Good luck guys and keep a keen eye. Jloc

If there are only one of two sand perches and the rest of the perches are of different varieties, I don't see what harm it causes. I agree it's bad to make your keet sit on all-sand, all-the-time, but a single sand perch in the bottom of a big cage like that? They don't have to go near it they don't want to.
