My first parakeet was adopted from my friend who had an allergic reaction to her--hair loss. She (my friend) had origanally bought a boy and a girl and put them in a small cage, the boy died. I have now had her for about a year ( sweetart! ) and I recently adopted two more parakeets because the owner got too old to take care of them. It is a boy and a girl in seperate cages( I checked the ceeres first thing ) and I was going to just get the girl to introduce with my girl but the pair was bonded and called for each other so I could not bear to seperate them. Since then I have been thinking of breeding in the near future so I do have a few questions. My first one is about my preffered breeding female, Sweetart. She is 2, 2 1/2 around there and the sweetest thing ever. Although my friend did not ever take her out of her cage I trained her within about a week, I was able to do that because of her great additude and her ability to adjust. I checked her cere and it is brown and rough so I think seh is sexually mature. But she is very small and I worry that may end up in diffuculty, what do you think? Another question is about my other female tweedy, her cere is rough but it is ivory does that mean that she is not sexually mature? Her last owner had her for 6 months so including the 2 months it takes for the budgie to be old enough to rehome she is probably around 8-10 months.
I also wanted to say I am a gerbil breeder so I understand the responsibility it takes to do this as I am only 13. I also know that I have to be there a lot so I am going to try to do this during the summer, brreding season for parakeets is spring summer right?
thanks in advance for your help!
-Kate

Welcome to the forum.

Sweetart sounds like she is in breeding mode.
What color is tweedy - some color mutations don't follow the simple cere color rules. It sounds like she could also be in breeding mode.

If you have a bonded pair I don't know how it would work out to put the male with Sweetart. There are a lot of people on this forum that could answer that.

You probably don't want to put two females and one male in the same cage. The females will fight over the male, and sometimes do a lot of damage or even kill the other female.

Parakeets are a little more responsibility to breed than gerbils, but it is good that you have the experience.

I agree with blr. IF you breed, you should breed Tweedy, not Sweetart. That is because Tweedy and the male are already bonded and are going to want to breed and will work togteher beter to raise a successful clutch. Also, if you are aying that Tweedy is very small then yes, she could have difficulty laying eggs and cold end up eggbound or she may just use up a lotof her cutrients from her small body which is never good. Be sure that you have a REASON to breed you keets and homes that they can go to once they hatch. Good luck.

I already have two probable homes smile . Tweedy is a good size and she is an ino with cinnamon. I won't put them all in the same cage.
thanks

If the cere is ivory and rough then she is a female but can you specify what you mean by ivory? And is it flakey? And a female keet can go into breeding mode at any time of year, not only spring and summer.
