Yesterday I had my first experience with reptiles (bearded dragons) and I think I may be hooked. I am actually thinking about the crested geckos though. I think that they would work okay for my classroom. I was wondering what would I need to get in order to have a gecko, besides the aquarium. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Oh, what is the best thing to put in the bottom of the cage (I heard moss)?

woooooooooooooooooo!

gerome loves you. (he's a beardie)

and yayyyyyy I love my cresteds. I got my new scale and weighed them all today and I am very pleased with their weights. =]
anywho.

with a crested gecko (very good pet) you need a very simple set up.

A 10 gallon is okay for a baby, and tolerable for an adult, but a larger one would be better. if it's a 10 gallon, you need to invert it so it's standing on end, and it can be difficult to open and manage when it's like that. I suggest ZooMed or Exoterra tanks. they are well made and a little pricey, but well worth it. sice they are aboreal (they climb on glass) height is always better than width. as for inside the tank, you need lots of foliage. they love to hide and they are jungle geckos so lots of stuff in the tank is good. the rule is if it takes you less than 10 seconds to find him on a regular basis, you need more hiding spots, haha.

my little cages just have silk ones from the dollar store that you just rinse off under some hot water to get the dust off. I use the long vine ones for my big guys though becuase they take up more space in the tank. They love tubes, too. I found a round piece of driftwood that works perfectly! I love it. but you can also just use PVC piping.

They eat baby food, crickets, and Crested Gecko Diet (a powder you mix with the water and/or baby food)

as for substrate, Eco Earth (coconut fiber) works good becuase you NEED to keep the humidity up (frequent misting is a must). but you can also use sphagnum or peat moss. Don't use sand. Reptile bark works, it's what i started them on, but it doesnt keep humidty so its not the best.

as for heat, no heat pad needed- becuase they are aboreal and dont spend time on the bottom. you'll want a heat lamp with a low wattage heat bulb. I use 60watts becuase my room can get chilly and they love to "bask" under the lamp. I keep my hatchlings at room temp and have no issues. Depending on the room temp, you may or may not need a heat source.

They ARE nocturnal, so chances are they wouldnt be very active during the day (which doesnt make for a great class pet) but I can get my guys out during the day with no problem)

my head is hurting so that's all i can type right now, but congrats on getting hooked!! welcome to the dark side- we have geckos =]

Zoo - thanks for all the info. I will let you know if I get one. I have a friend who has an aquarium already, which I believe is bigger than 10 gallons. I will then have to get a screen for the top and all the stuff for inside.

Zoo would a 20" high x 18" wide x 12" long work for a crested. There is one on ebay for about $40 that comes with a stand and some things inside. Here is the site.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Very-Nice-Reptile-Ca...1QQcmdZViewItem

Hopefully that will take you there. Tell me what you think.
Thanks

that would be perfect, but only if you're putting it in a hot and very humid area. Glass is much better for cresteds becuase they need the humidity and a cage like that won't keep it well. plus, a lot of them don't drink from a water bowl, they drink off the glass after you spray the tank.

Okay, I guess I will pass on it then. I have a friend who has a glass aquarium already that I can have. I'm not sure how big it is but I will have to find a screen top for it. I guess I will just use that if I can find a screen for it. Best of all it is free. I just need to get the things that go inside. I can clean it will a mix of bleach and water or would vingear and water be better. I believe it was used for fish.
Thanks again for tolerating my questions.

no bleach. Expecially becuase they are so up-close-and-personal with the glass and lick off of it, etc. thier tiny systems couls not handle the tiniest bit of bleach residue.
you should be able to use just very hot water and a clean, never-used, scrubby sponge, (that has NO chemicals on it) but if you need to, use water and vinegar.

and it's all good. Really, I enjoy helping people out with reptiles, it's fun for me (which is probably why I enjoy my job so much sometimes)

Zoo - Can I use pieces of pine tree or pecan trees in a gecko's cage? I went and got some fake foilage today. I may go Saturday and price some geckos.

I'm really not sure. I use driftweood and grape vines. I don't know about those, but remember it can't be anything that has been treated with pesticides. I don't really recommend taking anything from outside becuase you dont know if there's bigs or chemicals. If you get a baby, you shouldnt have to use sticks at all becuase the leaves can support their weight. I have a tiny pice of driftwood in my juvinile's cage and he still gets around just fine.

As for prices, the lowest for a baby will probably be 49.99 (at places like petco)
(if they even have them this time of year)

Okay, I will buy some from either petsmart or some other pet store. I just went to pick up the cage from my aunt. It is 30" x 12". Do you think this is too big? I've read that if you get a baby that you don't want the cage to be too big. Again thanks for answering all my questions.

30x12x? what's the other dimension? I think it may be too big for a baby. HOWEVER- if you can find a way to section it off temprarily or get a cheapo plastic cage or something you could move it up in a few months.

the most important thing is that you not stress him out in that large of an environment, and that it's not so large that he can't find his food.
now that i think, what i said before doesnt really make sense, these guys live in the wild, and nature's not "too big". as long as he's eating, there shouldnt be a problem/

Sorry I should have put the other it is 30 x 12 x 12. If you think I need to I may be able to section it off with a piece of cardboard or something. Just something temp. Cause I would really hate to stress him and he lose his tail or die. I think they are so much prettier with their tails than without. My aunt also gave me a hiding tunnel, a heat rock which I wouldn't plug in but they could still climb on it, and some other type of decoration. So I am almost ready for one and I've only spent about $5 on fake plants and a spray bottle.

yeah, plants are cheap from the dollar store, that's where I got mine! my boss sells ones the same size for $6.99 plus, he sells regular old spray bottles for $3.99 i dont buy them from our store, haha.

they are pretty with their tails. I got both of my females without tails and they're cool though (breeding often causes females to drop their tails, like many other geckos species)
but I love them the same =]
I've never had one drop it's tail on me though- I suppose that would be freaky....

that cage just smaller than the size of my breeding tank with three adults in it- so I would really recommend trying to secion it off somehow. it would be great for a pair though if you ended up with a female you could get another female. =]

Well, it might be awhile before I get one. No one around me has any in stock. All the crested geckos are gone. One Petsmart might be able to special order one for me. Some of the other Petsmarts had other types of geckos just not the crested. I think they said a yellow line gecko and of course lepoard.

yeah, you may have to wait until closer to spring. A lot of them are hatching about now, but won't be able to be sold for about a month. (like mine)

I may be getting a crestie this week. I put an ad on craigslist saying that I wanted to buy a crestie. A lady emailed me that she had some males, females, and babies. I am trying to work out a day and time to go and look at them and pick one up. I can't wait. Now I need to get the cage ready. I will post a pic after I get him/her.

I paid $40. I wasn't quite sure of the age. I know he was a little bit bigger than some of the others. Do you know what morph he is? I think she said the father was pinstripe. He looks like him. He hasn't been active tonight though. Guess that is expected with the day that he has had.
What do you feed yours? She only feeds them CGD from off the internet. Occasionally she will give them crickets, but mainly just uses the CGD.

Crested geckos are by nature hand tamed.

WOW- 40 for that guy? that is an AMAZING deal for that kind of morph- just so you know =]

He deffinetly looks like alight pinstripe with a bit of harley. you can't really know for sure until they're about half grown becuase they can change colors on you.
and yeah, he's just stressed, it's a new environment and everything, just give him time to chill and try not to handle him a lot and he'll be fine. (they become much more active after you shut the lights out, too.

I feed Repashy Superfoods CGD every other day then crickets twice a week.

Do you get it off the internet or at a pet store? I've seen a jar of CGD on Petco other than that on a Pangea internet site. The Pangea ones come in bags.

I actually got a 2 lb bag from my boss when I got into cresties and it's lasted a while, haha. It's about half gone.
I think he ordered from pangea.

they have the little containers, too, at petco and stuff, but you'll go through that fast. ( i think they have..purple screw-top lids?)

the store I work at sells babies for 49.99
but if you buy them from breeders (like Anch did) you can get them cheaper. and at reptile shows, too.

probably. we have one that's every 1st saturday of the month but I have yet to make it out there (i work saturdays)

also,
not to drag you away from this forum or anything, but I go on a Rhacodactylus (crestie family) forum that's through Superfoods.Repashy.com
and another reptile forum that's RedTailBoa.net
they are both really informational.

(My username on both of those is TDG_ONEX)
