I took Ganja to the vet on Wednesday for a beak trim. Her beak was been really overgrowing for the past couple of months, and no one could tell me exactly what was causing it, since my other three birds are still fine... While she was back with the vet, she started bleeding around her cere, and then she died. He wasn't sure if it was stress or an underlying condition related to her beak problem.
Ganja was never hand-tamed, I just liked to watch her play, so it was strange when they put her in my hands. She had more weight to her then I thought she would... She was a really pretty bird, and very funny. She would launch onto the swing from as far away as possible to make it move. She was mean to the other females and would just bite them on their wings or tails to make them move. She was just a sassy plump young lady! I buried her down in the woods, wrapped up with a branch of millet, because if I know Ganja, she'll be hungry on whatever journeys come next for her!
If I had any advice to give to you guys based on my experience, I'd say... Get your bird used to being handled, if you can. Just because I was never patient enough for it doesn't mean other people can't do it!
Make sure your birds have a good balanced diet. Like I said - they weren't exactly sure what was wrong with her, but a couple of people mentioned her liver as a possible problem. I wonder if maybe I'd worked harder to get them acclimated to fruits and vegetables and grains if she'd still be okay...
And most of all - love and appreciate your birds while you have them! They bring us SO much laughter and entertainment, and you just don't realize what silly beautiful creatures you get to act as a guardian to until you lose them...
R.I.P Ganja, the cage isn't the same without you...
