Hello. I have a question regarding my second parakeet.

I currently live in US but I went to visit my homeland, in Greece for the summer and so I had to leave my parakeet to a friend of mine. When I came back, I saw that there was another parakeet into my first parakeet's cage. My friend bought me another one as a gift! I am very excited about that since I know from fact that parakeets do not like to stay alone. I also know that when you buy your second parakeet, it first has to stay in its own cage (so that you can train it properly) and then buy another one (a bigger one) to put your two parakeets together.

So, I was just wondering if it would okay for them to stay together in a single cage, which primarily is supposed to fit only one parakeet. If so, how can I train my second parakeet if there is the first one inside the cage at the same time?

I would appreciate any kind of help!

Well from what I know (which I'll admit isn't a lot), it will be difficult, if not impossible, to train the new one while he is in the same cage as the other one, but of course you can try. It would probably be best to get a separate cage if you plan on training, but it is up to you.

If you do keep them in the same cage, definitely get a bigger one! Parakeets are small, but they do need their space.

welcome to the forum.having more then one keet is great.but what is recommended is for a period of around four weeks keep them sep. the reason being if the new keet is ill your first keet won't come in contact with it.yes it is hard to train two keets in one cage but it can be done it just takes more time it can take months.read lisa forum on trainng it will help you good luck.another reason it takes longer to train them is because they have already bonded together.

Well first make sure that the cage is relatively large. No smaller than like 20"x18"x20", i would recomend. THen make sure that the 2 keets get along with eachother, if they dont get a seperate cage for a while. Yes, it will be difficult to train a keet that shares a cage, but i did it! Just take your keet out and wrap him in a small cloth to hold onto him gentely! Then try just lightly touching him so he gets used to your finger. take him into a small room like a bathroom but first make sure their is nothing for him to ingest or fall into (toilet). It will take him a while to get used to you but you may find it easier if he is out of his cage. Try letting both birds out at same time in bathroom or other small room so that your new bird can see that your other bird is not afraid and then he may catch on to what has happend. Wait at least a week to do this so he gets used to his new surroundings! Good luck and congrats on your new family member!

check out the forum it has a section that deals with correct cage sizes for each number of birds,plus if you ask someone can help you find a decent price for a larger cage.bear in mind most new keet don't like being handed it only frightens them more making it more diffecult to train.remember a keet has to get to trust you and know you won't harm it.if you reach towards it and it backs away it's a sign it is very scared give it time lisa way has help so many people including myself.never force a keet it won't become your friend that way.
