hello everyone. I'm new to this forum but I had a question...recently my female keet hatched 6!!! new baby keets~ i thought the last egg was not going to hatch because it was about 4 days from the last. So I know the mom is doing a good job feeding her babies because they are growing but with 6 mouths to feed, does she need help? should I help her by hand feeding? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!!!!

OK some questions and hopefully some help.

First and foremost..........call your avian vet and get assistance from them. We are simply here to help with our own experiances, advice and education. NOT to take the place of advice from your vet.

Does the female have a male helping feed? If yes, just keep checking their crops to be sure they are all being fed. you will be able to look at them and tell straight away. 6 babies will in fact be hard on the mother......lots of crops to keep full. Is she showing any sign of being stressed? If she is trying to feed all of them on her own, I would either help by supplimenting feedings every few hours if you see their crops are not being kept full, or fostering 2 of the chicks to another breeding pair if you have them. Is this a first time mother or does she have experience with a former clutch?

Handfeeding is a HUGE undertaking as usually, once you start you must continue and YES thats 24/7!!! Do you have any handraising formula and do you know HOW to handfeed baby chicks?

IF you are having any doubts or concerns, you MUST call your avian vet and ask for assistance. they can guide you on what steps to take and HOW to handfeed if needed.

Best of luck and CONGRATS on the babies!

I've definitly heard that you should not intervene with the feeding proccess, unless the mother totaly abandons the chicks.
Sadly, I must say, that there is probably a high chance that one or 2 of the baby keets will not make it because the mother will concentrate on bringing up the older ones, more likely to survive. But that's not always true.
If there is not a father keet around feeding the mother keet, you *may* have to do something about it.
But I would definitly contact your avian vet first to get some tips. smile

Thanks big bad momma for saying I was a caring person. smile That really made my day.

Oh, and WELCOME!!

hello everyone! And thank you for all of the advice so far. and thank you big momma for being so caring! For the questions by keetcrazy: The male does help the female with feeding. He eats and gives it to the mom and she feeds all of the babies. I dont' think she's stressed but she is making this different sound. I dont' know how else to describe it but it sounds like the way one of the local wild birds "chirp" it's a very high pitch single note. I've never heard her sing that way before...maybe she picked it up from the local bird? that bird comes and hangs out near them trying to pick up any stray seeds...There is quite a size difference among the chicks. I would say 3 of the 6 are getting pretty big...they're about 8 days old now, and the fourth one next seems healthy as well. The last 2 were born within about 4 days of each other but you can definitely tell that they were the last to hatch. o yes, and the mom is a first time mom as well. I only have hedwig and sky so there are no foster parents available...

I agree with keetcrazy! You NEED to call your avian vet, and ask THEM what you should do...this question is for them to answer best, as they are trained and qualified.

Just a note- if she starts to reject, and not feed some or a few of the babies (check if their crops are full every few hours or so) then you will have to step in and handfeed them. I'd go to the store, and just PICK OUT the supplies, but don't buy them yet, so you're prepared if this happens. If it does you'll need:

-formula appropriate for their age
-syringe/eyedropper (dependent on age)
-brooder (their kind of artifical nest when you're caring for them)

but, PLEASE! call you avian vet ASAP!! smile

Yes you can assist with feeding if it's necessary.

There are specialised foods available for various species and either your vet can advise or your pet store which will be the best. The food must be about 40 degrees; if it's too hot it can damage the digestive system, and if too cold, it will not be digested well. The amount of dilution of the food is important depending on the age of the chick. Syringes are the best method of feeding, but if the chick does not have a strong feeding reflex, food may not be swallowed but pass into the lungs instead.

The amount to feed also depends on the size of the bird and its age. You will need to carefully monitor its daily intake and weight gain. Since chicks are susceptible to infection, you need to disinfect the brooder and feeding implements. Frequency of feeding decreases with the age of the bird. You may need to feed up to 10 times a day including during the night initially. Often a bird will wean itself by refusing some of its feedings. As it matures, start offering it solid food to encourage weaning.

This is a full time job so be prepared to be very busy and remember, once you start, you can't just stop.

It's also advisable during the feeding time to add vitamin and calcium supplements to the main drinking water which should be changed daily.

It is my opinion that all sounds like it is going fine. If the babies are being fed and the hen has the help of the father, it is nature taking it's course. The sound you are hearing is *PROBABLY* in my opinion again, the hen calling to the male to be fed. You do have a large clutch, but not one that is unmanagable by the parents. Just keep a close eye on them. I would still call the vets office and be sure they are aware that all 6 hatched. They will truely have some good advice for you.

Again GOOD LUCK and HEALTHY BABIES!

just an update~ well I am an intern at a local Vet and he said that the best thing to do is to let the momma do her job and just keep watching over her. he also suggested a few supplements that will help..so I'm just keepin an eye on them. I went to the local Petsmart and I bought a powder supplement just for breeding...and I also bought some of the hand feeding milk just in case...along with a syringe...and I just cleaned out their nest box very carefully! It was soooo amazing holding those baby birds! They are sooo light but i was VERY CAREFUL....Anyways, so I was checking out at the petsmart and the lady said that it's good to feed the parents meal worms because they're high in protein..is this true? Thank you for hearing my excited crazy ranting!

Hmm, I know protein and calcium are good for them when they are breeding. But I've never heard of feeding them meal worms. Ask LLPB. smile It sounds like you're fully prepared! I can't imagine how exciting this must be for you. laugh

YUCK............I dunno, but I couldn't do it. I could never buy them or touch them. Ekkkkkkkkkkkkkk

You can give them chicken egg and chicken (both cooked obviously) if you want to increase their protein. Much better solution if you ask me!!

yes, they are birds, and will eat the mealworms, and they are good for them...they may or may not eat them though...the egg cooked fully is the best for that. =]

sounds like you're doing great! good luck! laugh keep us updated.

Yes I plan on keeping all of them...I don't think I can sell or give them away for two reasons: 1. They're my first litter (? is that what you call them? ) and 2. I don't know who to give them to. hehe.

Oh my gosh!!!!!! Look at those little pink jellybeans! Makes me sooooo anxious for my babies. ( praying some of the eggs are fertile)

So glad to hear that all is well, they certainly look like they are being cared for nicely.

don't worry though! that's very normal for the runts to pass away since the mother is concentrating on the older ones...(you probably know this already)
Anyway, what an adorable picture! the fluffy lil guys look healty too. what color is the dad??
