I've almost had it! I've had tweetie for a month now, and he still treats me like the first day i got him. I've been more than gentle with him, training him properly, paying more than enough attention to him, and he still is biting! I've also done all i can about his biting too. I never flinch, i never move, and i also put my knuckle to his mouth and let him bite until he tired himself out. but he still insists! we will just be hanging out and he'll be sitting on me, and he will just bite constantly! we're not talking about little strikes...we're talking about holding on and grinding! I'm to the point of just forgetting about taming him and just let him stay in his cage. What am i to do??? I've done EVERYTHING!!! mad I mean, he even pierces the skin and makes me bleed. i have a lump of scar tissue forming on my thumb from the constant piercing at the same spot.

If you jerk your hand away or scream, you're just teaching him that his efforts to keep you out of his space are working. Rather than do this, you must ignore the bites (no matter how bad they are). If you can, get him to step up repeatedly, especially if he continues to bite your hands. Keep "laddering" him this way until he stops. When he stops, make a happy fuss and/or give him a treat.

http://budgietalk.com/ (under budgie behavior)

Another way to prevent or decrease territorial behavior is to change the cage every week or so. Rearrange all the perches and toys, rotate in new toys. Not only will this help curb territorial aggression, it will also keep your bird from becoming bored. If your budgie seems possesive over a particular toy, remove this toy and replace it with something else. You can try adding it back in after a week or so has passed but if the aggression starts again you may have to dispose of the toy.

(same as above)

Dont know if that'll help at all =( If he's biting particular spots though, you could try putting a plaster or somethin on that spot till he stops. Just to prevent a bit of pain >_<

the big part tho is i never jerk away when he bites. i make it a point! it just seems hopeless. just a thought....he's an alone bird...do you think he would be friendlier to me if i got a second bird, or will it be worse? my fiancee doesn't want me to get any more birds, but i betcha i could sneak one in!

well he wont like you as much, he'll like to other bird.
I have heard some things on teaching birdies tpo stop biting though.
Here we go... forgive me if I sound like Ceaser Milan (the Dog Whisperer) for a moment but, birds are flock animals. One bird in the flock is the leader. They way this bird becomes the leader is by biting and pecking the other birds into submission. It sounds like tweetie things hes the head bird. He isnt. How do you let him know this?
Well. obviously yelling doesnt work, they think its funny. Hitting them is a big no no, they dont connect it with what they have just done they just see it as you being mean.
there are two things you can do. One is every day when you take tweetie out make him step up (or ladder) about 10 to 15 times. In other words hes sitting on one finger put the other hand in front of him and say up firmly. If he bites you you keep your finger there and press more firmly on his belly and say up again. I would do it again once while hes out and then do it again befor eyou put him away. Eventually when he starts doing it with no complaint try to figure out a way to make it a game to make it more fun because its very much like the atkins diet, if you stop too soon you just gain all that agression back.
Another way of handling it is preemptive startling. The preemptive part is key. You have to see that hes about to bit before he bites and stop it while its still a thought that way (after enough times obviously) instrad of doing it and going oh wait this is bad, he thinks it and goes oh wait this is bad. So, you see his body language change in a way that indicates he's about to bite (you may have to watch him bite a few times to get this but usually they crouch real low and open their mouths) once you see the little glimmer even in his eyes drop your hang a few inches. Not enough to drop him or hurt him (and hopefully not enough for him to bits you just to hang on for dear life) but enough so that he goes 'Geez! What was that?!' it takes his mind off of wanting to bite you for the moment. do it again the next time and the next time and eventually he pairs the unwanted experiance (the hand drop or if hes on your shoulder clapping or doing something else very sudden) to the thought of hey, let me remind her im in charge.
A combination of this and the laddeirng will remind him that you are in fact in charge.
Be very careful not to yell in general but even more careful not to yell his name. You dont want TWEETIE! to be synonymous with BAD BIRD! Dont shake your finger at him. Even though that is startling its also using the very thing you want him to appreciate as a weapon...
I hope that helps smile

Well, im not realy that knowledgeable on the subject, new bird owner =) But read lots.. Though read knowledge isnt as good as experience. But from what I know, a second bird might help the problem, but you might lose your bond with Tweetie.

I'd try get him to behave with his biting, just keep at it, he'll pick up on it eventuly =D Having one bird that bonds with you but bite is better then 2 birds that dont bond and might still bite. Twice the bite >_<

thanks guys....heather, i'll try that! the tthing is he steps up very very well! when he is on the floor and can't fly (he's clipped) he will come to me to lift him up, but after he's up tthats when the biting starts. but i'll do more lattering and also that hand drop thing...i never thought of that!!!!

lewis...thanks for the encouragement....it's just so frustrating and need that encouragement. before him i had a keet that loved me and never ever even thought of bitingn....even since the first day i got him he never bit...he only screamed when he felt threatened in the beginning...so this is a whole new ball of wax for me.

Both of those methods are supposed to be for if he's biting your hand if he's already sitting on it

Thats exactly my case then heathesaurusrex. he'll be out of his cage and we'd be hanging out and he just reaches down and grabs my skin and chews. its soo annoying!

I am no expert but Tweetie looks like a girl, and my Coco is too and she bites like she means it. Girl budgies seem way more nippy. My Coco does like 4 step ups and try to take a piece of my finger then continues to step up like nothing happened its very odd.

I am trying to do what everyone is suggesting and it's not really working ..(the ignoring) soon i will take things a little more drastic I spoke to some trainers recently.

you think he's a girl? i'm not exactly sure...i know that he's too young to know for sure right now, but i'm judging now by the fact that he bobs and plays alot and also has some bluish tints in the cere. i guess won't know until some more months go by

One thing I was told by an avian specialist that is supposed to help with biting is to put them into a "time-out" cage, or turn your back on them. I was told that in the wild the other birds will turn their back to another that has offended them. I was also told if you got a "small" cage, like a carrier, that would be a good place to have a time-out. Just set them into it for no more than 5 minutes in a quiet, boring place in the house. I don't know if this a correct way of dealing with it though... maybe some of the other people on here have better ideas about it?? I feel for you though!! It's frustrating when you want to have a good relationship with your keet and biting is getting in the way!! Keep us posted!! smile

yeah I tried that a nouba doesnt really care honestly...
the hand drop thing does work though if you can remember to do it every time.
Also light blue with white around the nares in adolescent keets means a girl usually.

My CC has started trying to own all my apartment, he doesn't "allow" me to use my keyboard or comp mouse anymore.. he will bite the cr*p out of me and screech... I am getting really stressed with him as he has been a wonderful bird for the past year and he seems to get nippy every few months and attacks me for a few days... (yes I am a girl and no it is not at THAT time of the month!) BUT I have been looking for a link and it does seem to be at the Full moon! Interesting?? ANyone else's birds do the same at the same time?? hummm... tired

the picutres of Tweetie are fuzzy but she looks like a girl to me.
Also - the type of biting you are describing is clearly not the biting out of fearfulness since she is willing to sit on your hand. In fact, biting you while sitting on your hand is sort of a good sign because she is comfortable with you and not trying to get you away. She could be biting for several reasons. As coco's mama said, females are biters in general - so I would make sure you have plenty of toys that are chew-friendly in the cage. anything to shred like paper towels, or raffia, and of course a cuttle bone or mineral block.
When she bites you, she may simply be excited, playing, showing dominance, or just exhibiting her female biting "need".
You basically have to discourage the behavior without scaring her too much. The "wobble" technique is easy and used alot - where as soon as she bites, you wobble your hand so that it unsteadies her. You can say "No biting" when you do it - and i bet she will catch on quickly. They don't like that unsteady earth-is-moving sensation. I would try that - there are other techniques - but I think this one is very effective - let me know how it goes.

Raffia is this kind of grassish thing, isn't it?
Maybe I'm wrong.
We were supposed to know what it was in art class. But I forget now. We studied that too long ago lol.

Yeah the wobble techinque works really well.
And after she gets the point and stops biting, I'd advise you to keep going with whatever you are saying. Like say "No" firmly eveyrtime and after her biting decreases, don't wobble just say "No."
Then if she later does something else you don't like you can say "No" and she would probably get it.

read my topic that I made for this special purpose. I believe many of you already know it.

It's called ANTI-BITE TRAINING PROGRAM.

raffia is the artsy thing you can get at craft stores that looks sort of like string made out of straw. it comes in different dyed colors but i would get the natural color one. I just hang a few strands in the cage to gnaw on, and you can hang some toys from it too. it is very appealing to keets.

as far as biting - sometimes my keet would get SOOO excited if he was eating brocolli out of my hands that he would start biting the fleshy part of my finger tips really HARD - it killed. But after wobbling him a few times he stopped and I don't think he's done it for at least a year now if not longer.

Straw ... Grass ... Same thing! xD

But if you get another one, they don't nessacarily lose your bond. Skittles and Sunny are long-lost lovers, but Sunny hasn't lost his training.
Even though they play, chirp, and bond a lot with each other, it totally depends on the bird if they choose to do the same with you.

i'm not terribly worried about losing too much of a bond b/c i constantly have tweetie out and getting used to me....she's located in the living room where i'm always at too, so she gets alot of attention from me. if i got another one, that one would get the exact same treatment...i guess its just building up the confidence to get another one....plus, i really don't know how to introduce another bird.

I might have to get some of that raffia...i think i know hwat your talkign about....she is constantly biting tho, andt he toys she does have are mainly plastic....she does have a cuttle bone and i always give her millet...what about rope toys?

every keet is different so you will have to experiment with toys. my keet doesn't seem to care much for rope -
but he loves raffia - which you can get at any craft store, - michael, joannes, etc. i know alot of keets like hemp and i do hang a few toys from hemp (also available at craft stores), but my keet doesn't really bother much with it.

i'm really going to have to get sosmething like that b/c she sure has a biting need.
but today i've noticed a huge difference with her biting...i've been givingn her an "unstable pirch" when she sits on my hand and bites and it really payed off!! in just a couple days!!! today i took her out and no biting! when i took her off her play gym she did bite, but basically just to keep my finger steady when she steps up....I'm shocked at how well she's doing!

I'm glad this was brought up becasue i just started having the same problem with Peri. He/she is very dominant...although i believe he is a boy. anyway, the past couple of playtimes (I try to hold them on my hand for a while each playtime) he has started to bite/chew on the flesh of my hand. Bleu bites on my fingernails, i think he is curious, but Peri bites on my flesh. I will try these methods. Raffia sounds good. You know the handles on a paper gift bag? alot of times they are raffia, it kind of looks like a paper rope. you can unwrap and use it as a "ribbon" for gifts, etc. I will try some things i read here.

My birds love beads strung on hemp, just make sure the beads are big enough that they can't swallow them and the knots are tied tightly.
Also as to losing your bond wiht your bird. Nouba and I were very very good friends but I was at work and school a lot (she was always out sitting with me when I was home though, even if i was watching tv she sat on my shoulder or my lap or on the couch next to me) So I got Darcy to keep her company. They get the exact same attntion as before (well not really becaus Nouba's becoming meaner and meaner) And Nouba still got mean. Not right away but after a bit. She's still the tamer of the two, she sits on my hand and my shoulder and doesn't fly away unlike Darcy (who btw never bites, if I could smush them together they'd be the perfect bird) But just so you know, even if you have a good relationship the new bird will influence your bird and most likely in a direction away from you unless you get a hand fed socialized baby from a breeder.

My baby girl used to bite like you describe just after she was handtrained. When she did I just put her down and completely ignored her for a few minutes. The message seemed to get through, because she has stopped biting almost completely now. Or maybe this is just a stage the females go through.

My Coco gos for blood all of a sudden her nips turned into lunges at my hand if i reached in to hang a brocolli or something, I give her tone to shred. And she used to step up. Now after abou 2 steps ups she just trys to attak and it is vicious, i tried saying No in a firm voice, i tried rewarding the steps ups, but i cannot anymore be cause all she does is lunge for my hand. I think I made a monster but have no idea how or how to stop it. I tried to let her bite me as much as she wanted ( I am sure about her doing this to be dominant) but it made it worse. Now she will bite so i let her as in I don't care then she will literally hang from my finger trying to chew thru my skin and if I try to move her to a perch she just keeps holding on and biting . I never make a sound. Sigh. Any advice would be appreciated.
I don'y now what to do anymore.

I am having the same problem! Tulip was doing REALLY well with the whole biting thing until today! My daughter had a friend over and they were playing with her in the bedroom while I helped my hubby pull a tub out of the basement we were taking to the garbage..(long story!) Anywho, my daughter comes out and says Tulip is biting really hard again! I was really shocked because we had worked so hard with her to get her to stop... well I found out later the friend was grabbing her and holding her tightly in her hands.. mad GRRRRRR!! I was really mad at the girl and kinda mad at my daughter for not standing up and saying "DON'T DO THAT!" Needless to say.. NO MORE FRIENDS will be holding her!! So anywho, we are back to square one! The only way I have been able to stop the biting is by first saying "NO Biting!" firmly then placing her in a small carrier we have and putting her in a quiet dark room for 5 min. with no interaction from anyone in the family. I time it exactly. So far it seems to work for us. I also try to do this fairly quickly after the bite so she realizes that is what caused her to be placed there... I hate doing it though, but the unstable perch and just saying NO doesn't seem to work with her either! frown

Thanks 3budgies for my AWESOME AVATAR!! \:\)

It will stop. Noel bite me fore about 2 or 3 month.

Every keet is different.

Dont loose your temper on them. I lost my temper about 5 times with noel. We got set back about 3 weeks because of it.

see, if your bird is biting because of dominance i wouldnt let them bite, thats like saying ok you're rihgt you're in charge. and then she doesnt have to do anything you ask her to.
go for tweets' way of doing it. that might work much better, make sure you make yourself in charge not her, or you'll never win.

mine will bite if I hold them in my hand but not that hard.as i'm holcing them and they are biting i'm saying in a soft voice don't bite your mommy, pretty bird cute bird no bite and it seems to calm them down like I said the bites are not that bad unless I scare them then they bite hard but they stop when I start talking to them.

Befuddled?
-1 point, you can be fuddled or muddled but you can not be befuddled. See!

Condolences are offered when someone or something passes on it's an expression of sympathetic sorrow.

Game ON!!

Thats odd, i have a boy and a girl, and the girl is much harder to deal with than my little boy, Pom Pom. I wonder if you got a boy to even things out? Not sure

female keets do tend to be much more aggresive then male keets smile
However getting another boy isnt typically considered a good answer because then they might mate, another girl would be ok though smile

erh, pm llpb
but before you do give it serious though, a lot of us are very... erh.. adamant about certain points of breeding (knowing how much its going to cost you, and the hen, it will shorten her life span and there is a very good possability of medical emergencies as well as what are you going to do with the babies? there will be more then 1 or 2...)
but she's the most knowledgable of any of us about breeding smile

Take a look at Steph's Egg binding pics and decide if you can deal with whatever may happen she is proof anything can happen.

Don't click the link WARNING!!! If you can't handle anything medical and scary and kinda gross. I can't get a better word now it's still heart wrenching.

If you feel you can there are graphic pics of egg binding when it happened to one of our beloved forum members keets. And it is informative.

and we should mention the keet in that post died because of the medical emergency even though steph took her to the vet. The bird had surgery, maybe more then one and was recouperating on meds for a few days before she died.
In other words, even if you do everything right its still a severe health risk to your bird.

Oh indeed my bad, thank Heathersorralegs!

Stephanie was a super mom but you can only do so much. If you read it you can see how much she went through for her keet.

It won't necessarily happen, but I just thought it was a powerful example of what MIGHT happen cos' babies don't always happen smoothly, just like with people.

Except budgies are alot smaller.

I just want to clear in no way is that a refection on Steph. She is super sweet!

its ok, Kila bites me all the time, sometimes I wonder if she does it for fun, the worst is when I get on the phone of the computer, she likew attacks my hands. But recently I tried doing an earthquake on her, and if I do a particularly semi strong earthquake just strong enough that she flaps her wings a little she stops. I've also been told blowing lightly in their face works, but hen I tried that she was unphased by it.

Its frustrating, yeah and with blowing in the face sometimes she'd even lean into it like "awe that feels nice...." its ....grrr! lol silly keets!
