now I know its harmful enough to kill a bird, BUT I was looking at an apartment thats really just the basement of a house and the owner has a few teflon pans and so if the kitchen is upstairs and on the opposite side of the house then my room where the parakeets would be staying, is that ok?

the answer to this will be my final decision as to rent the apartment, its nice and all but if I cant have my parakeets then its a no! haha!

Teflon pans can be used, but they require supervision. If somebody's cooking something in the pan, that's ok. It's when the pan is left empty on the heat that is the issue. At super high heat with nothing in the pan, fumes will be released that are toxic. If the other people in the house aren't in the habit of burning empty pans you'll be fine. smile

I would also make sure the bird ar on the opposite end of the basement where the owners kitchen is. most fumes travel up but some might travel down through the gas lines to the stove and so forth.

well the thing is its 13 steps to get downstairs and I claimed the room thats furthest from the kitchen downstiars and plus I'll just ask the landlord not to just let the pan heat up befor cooking on it

Hey, I not seen you forever... (it is shadow.. I made your avatar last time) New screen name.. Good to see you!, tarzan and charity...

I personally think you should be fine. Just use make sure everyone in the house understands the dangers and are willing to make some accomadations and it should be fine.

Again good to see you..
