I know this topic came up on this forum numerous times - who do you take your budgies to, an avian vet or a general vet?

I wanted to share my experience from this past weekend with you: My male keet, Reggie got sick on Sunday. He started getting all fluffed up and I noticed his poops were very watery. He also vomited a couple of times (not regurgitate but actually throw up). Since I knew there was no chance of finding an avian vet on a Sunday, I took him to an Animal Hospital which has an Emergency Unit that's open 24/7. The vet who examined him agreed that he looked pretty sick and then, to my surprise, went to call an avian vet colleague of hers at home - actually the same one who had seen my keet about a year ago! Then she came back and told me that the avian vet had suggested that they rehydrate my keet by giving him fluids under the skin and that he would see the keet on Monday. So they did that, and returned him to me an hour later, looking noticeably better. Long story short, I'm happy to report that he's doing great now.
I guess what I've learned is, even if we prefer to take our keets to an avian vet, we should not shy away from taking them to a regular vet if we can't get them seen by an avian vet soon enough. I myself was skeptical that the visit to a regular vet would be of any use, but ended up taking him mainly out of fear that he might not make it through the weekend. I hadn't even thought that the vet could call up an avian specialist and ask for advice - which was great!Who knows what would have happened if I had decided to wait until Monday to take Reggie to an avian vet? My story could have had a very bad ending, I guess (shudder!).
Nikkums, I know you mentioned that things are different in Australia but here, even when I called the Animal Hospital before taking Reggie there, they made it very clear to me that they did NOT have an avian vet and that they could only help with life or death kind of matters. So I guess the veterinary training in North America must differ greatly from that in Australia.
Anyway, just thought I'd share...

I agree Nora, in a situation like this any vet is better than none. When tey are ill no time to waste. Glad your bird is okay.
