Gruyere and Wine
Gruyere was originally from a village in Switzerland, and is a cow milk cheese. I grew up loving Gruyere style cheese made by Swiss Knight.
Gruyere has a smooth, sweetish kind of flavor to it. I find it goes very well with sweetish types of wines.
I enjoy this with port - especially tawny port. The sweetness / raisiny flavors of the port go well with the sweet creaminess of the gruyere.
Another wine that goes well - although it might be hard to find - is a sweet blackberry or blueberry wine. These sweet berry flavors go quite nicely with the gruyere.
On the white side, gruyere goes well with chardonnay and sauvignon blanc.
Both the wine and cheese go well with a plate of berries.
