Clover Hill Winery, PennsylvaniaDateline: 10/15/2000
Even though is was close to the 6pm closing time, the woman was friendly and welcoming as we came in the door. I was impressed by the size of their gift shop area and the number of wines available. As we were on two wheels, I asked to taste only five wines. We began with the Oak Vidal Blanc ($10.99), made with 100% Vidal Blanc grapes. The wine is aged in French and American oak. This was light, crisp, and citrussy. This would go very well with seafood. Next was the Vidal Blanc ($8.79) aged in stainless steel. This was also light and fruity, with more of the fruit flavor to it. This would be great with fruit or salads. We tried the Turtle Rock Red ($11.99), made from 100% Chambourcin grapes. This red was light, a bit sweet, with a nice raspberry flavor to it. This would be good with pasta. The DeChaunac ($9.59) is a gentle red, with a light, soft fruit flavor. Our final wine was the Raspberry dessert wine ($9.99/half). Tihs was great! Very fresh, tart, not sweet and sticky. Very fruit-ful that would be great for drinking with chocolate cake or mousse. We grabbed as many bottles as we could stuff into our saddle-bags, and made a note of its location. We'll be sure to stop by the next time we pass through Pennsylvania!
