The Frugal Gourmet: Wine & Appetizers
Author: Jeff Smith
The Frugal Gourmet is always fun to watch, and in this video he takes on the
challenge of doing his dishes in time while explaining about wine and appetizers!
He pulls it off in style, but don't look for any earth shattering wine
information!
This video begins with a tour of the Beringer winery, in California. Jeff gets
to go down into the cellar, to taste some Cabernet straight from the barrel.
He's pretty impressed by this, and finds it interesting (but doesn't actually
say what it tastes like!) He is then allowed to try a 1937 Cabernet, that they
decant over a candle. He likes this one too, although he keeps the actual flavor
to himself. On to the food!
He begins with a dry sherry zucchini fritter, which looks very tasty. He then
moves on to a spinach crepe, and then makes a vegetable mix and marjoram with
those crepes, and adds in some salmon. He does another meal later with the
crepes - using lox and swiss cheese.
Other dishes included carrots with white wine, and sherry scallops. They were all
pretty quick and easy to make, and did look quite delicious. My main criticism
is with the "wine tidbits" he sprinkles through the show. he says you don't hold
a wine glass by the bowl because it gets fingerprints on the glass. What?? How
about because it warms up the wine!!
