Boston Wine Expo 2001 -
Newport Rivers and Robin Garr
We swung by the Newport Vineyards booth, a local Rhode Island winery which offers quite enjoyable wines. Their "Great White" is a blended white that is very popular. We tried a sample of their vidal Ice Wine - one they make with traditional Canadian methods. Unlike some who stick the grapes in a freezer, Newport allows them to freeze slowly on the vine before making the wine out of them. We found the wine to be fruity and light, with the characteristic sweetness. This is Newport's third year of making ice wine.

A local favorite
Nearby, Stonington Vineyards out of Stonington Connecticut was pouring their 1998 Chardonnay. They had a great harvest in 1998, and the wine shows why this region is well known for its Chards. We asked after the gewurztraminer, but this sells out so quickly that they only offer it at the winery.
We were also fortunate enough to run into Robin Garr, who runs the winelovers.com webpages. Robin was a delight to talk to, recommending some Chateauneaf-du-Pape wines, a port table, and the Pol Roget. We talked about local wineries, and he explained how Kentucky only has one winery in his area to support.
