Sparkling Wine Tasting 2001
Part 2 - the French Champages
Of course, all Champagne is from France - that's the name of a physical area of France. Otherwise it'd be like making "Authentic Maine Spring Water" from a well in New Mexico. Still it's always good to be clear :)
Pommery "Pop" non vintage, $10 (small)
This has been made famous on Sex and the City and other shows. It's a small blue bottle of Champagne, served with a straw. It's the Sprite of Champagnes, very easy to drink, sweet, fizzy, with a lemon/lime flavor. When we later began experimenting with tossing Strawberries into the Champagnes (another 'improvement' seen at some weddings) we found only the Pop really did well with them. If you think Champagne isn't sweet enough, this is one to try.
Beaumont des Crayères Grand Prestige Brut non vintage, $23
We enjoyed this one a great deal, it was very complex. It had toasty, earthy flavors, with a hint of wood, with touches of lemon and grapefruit. This went really well with the cheese and food later on.
Perrier Jouet non vintage, $10 (small)
This was nice but not exceptional. Fruity, gentle flavors, sort of fizzy.
Pol Roger non vintage, $30
This was our other favorite, along with the Greg Norman. This had a rich, complex flavor, very flavorful and enjoyable.
