Hazelnut Nut -
Aromas and Flavors of Wine
Hazelnut is a very common nut, with its cousin the Filbert. These trees are found in Oregon and Washington, in Turkey, Greece and Italy, in Australia, and in just about every land in between. The name "Filbert" comes from St. Filbert's Day, which happens in February and coincides with when the plant tends to bloom.
Hazelnuts are very popular during the holidays, and can be found at most grocery stores.
The Wines with a Hazelnut Flavor
Hazelnut is perhaps the king of wine flavors, because it is found in two of the most expensive and celebration-oriented wines. These are Champagne and Port. Champagne is a light bubbly wine made only in Champagne, France that is associated with holidays, weddings, New Year's celebrations and other moments of joy.
Port is a heavy red wine that is fortified with brandy. It is also associated with celebrations, and it can easily age for 20 or more years. This makes it a common gift for newborns and newlyweds, for them to enjoy in their later years.
