Cherry Fruit -
Aromas and Flavors of Wine

Cherries originally come from central Eurasia, from the Black Sea region. The Chinese became quite fond of cherries , as did cultures in the middle east. The Greeks and Romans made sure to spread cherry trees to all corners of their empires. The English colonists then brought the tree to the Americas. Note that native Americans were eating a wild "chokecherry" as nutrition even before the cherry trees were brought over. Michigan is now famous for its cherry trees and grows 40% of cherries in the US.

Kirschwasser, also known as Kirsch, is a famous cherry liqueur popular in northern Europe.

The Wines with Cherry Flavor

Cabernet Franc is a light red wine with a cherry flavor. Castel del Monte is a lesser known wine from Apulia, Italy with the cherry flavor.

Merlot and Zinfandel have a black cherry flavor.
